There are three paintings in this gallery by my dear friend Charlie - Lionel M. Charlton. He is a an incredible painter. We have known each other since I was 19. Charlie taught himself to paint and to draw (mentored by a local artist, Paul Lake) and got into the Royal Academy in his early 30s on the strength of his portfolio - he had been turned down by Southamton Art College when he was 18. I am proud to be Charlie's mate. The elderly woman in the stunning portrait was the last surviving witness to the murder of 27 hostages by the occupying Nazi army in a quarry near Chateau Briant, close to Sarah and Charlie's home.
